Kannonkoski is located in northern Central Finland, near the Pyhä–Häkki National Park. The surrounding neighbouring municipalities are Karstula, Kivijärvi, Viitasaari and Saarijärvi.

Kannonkoski has a population of about 1200, more than half of whom are young people and young adults. The municipality has an area of 549 km².
