Kannonkoski is located in northern Central Finland, near the PyhäHäkki National Park. The surrounding neighbouring municipalities are Karstula, Kivijärvi, Viitasaari and Saarijärvi.
 
Kannonkoski has a population of about 1200, more than half of whom are young people and young adults. The municipality has an area of 549 km².

3. The monks of Valamo

The monks of the Valamo Monastery evacuated to Kannonkoski in 1939 and stayed there until 1940. Valamo Monastery is the most significant and largest Orthodox monastery in Finland.
