Basic information

Kinnula is located in northern Central Finland, near the Salamajärvi National Park. The surrounding neighbouring municipalities on the Central Finland side are Kivijärvi, Pihtipudas and the city of Viitasaari. In addition, Kinnulas neighbouring municipalities include Lestijärvi, Perho in Central Ostrobothnia and Reisjärvi in the region of Northern Ostrobothnia. 
 
Kinnula has a population of about 1500, of whom slightly less than half are of working age. The municipality has an area of 495.7 km².
 
The main livelihoods in the municipality are the service sector, agriculture and forestry. In the public sector, the municipality of Kinnula is a major employer, employing people in for example administrative and teaching tasks.

Kinnula is surrounded by several municipalities. People do business, travel and work in many different directions, such as Viitasaari and Pihtipudas. Some of them conveniently go shopping in the direction of Northern Ostrobothnia in Ylivieska or Oulu. While some drive in the direction of Kokkola or Vaasa.

There is no public transport, only school transport. A bus goes in the direction of Perho and one goes to Kivijärvi. Your own car is necessary.

There is a swimming hall in Kinnula, which is open a few days a week. What makes this swimming hall special is that it can be rented for private use on weekends and holidays.


2. International Upper Secondary School

Kinnula Upper Secondary School is special in that international students study there. Their goal is to complete their upper secondary school diploma in Finnish, and they already know the language when they arrive in Kinnula.

Salamajärvi National Park

Salamajärvi National Park is partly located in Northern Central Finland and is part of the nature of Kinnula and Kivijärvi. Salamajärvi is known for its extensive swampy areas and untouched beautiful forests. In the national park, you can also experience how silence roars in your ears. In Kinnula, traditional events include an Easter bonfire, which is traditionally lit behind the Kinnula Parlamentti. HeinäRokki is held in Kinnula in the summer and there is a program for the whole family. The Muttiteatteri which is a local theatre group also performs in the summer.
