Kyyjärvi Camping is a delightfully idyllic campsite near the center of Kyyjärvi. The attraction of the campsite is the sunset, which you can admire in the little cabins even from a lying position.
Roope Valden and his wife Riikka arrived in Kyyjärvi to host the campsite through happy coincidences. Campsite operators represent a new type of seasonal entrepreneurship in Sydänsuomi. The couple spends the winter in Helsinki and arrives in Kyyjärvi like migratory birds at the dawn of spring.
– I lived in Helsinki as an adult and had no ties to Kyyjärvi or northern Central Finland. But when the campsite loomed ahead, it didn’t take long to inch. You shouldn’t regret what you’ve done, but what you didn’t do, camp host Roope says.
Visitors come from bigger cities and other countries
The campsite had lived a quiet life for a while, and Valden describes that the popularity of the campsite has been rebuilt. The small, beautifully decorated cottages can accommodate forty overnight guests. In addition, the campsite enables caravan life in the lake scenery.
– In the past years, we have been looking for new target groups, such as motorcyclists. They’re just about to find us. The location is good, halfway between Jyväskylä and Vaasa.
Valden says that it is important for the campground operators that there is enough for visitors to do in the area.
– We rent sup-boards and rowing boats and cooperate with, for example, Salamajärvi National Park. Typically, the camper spends the night here for 1-2 days, and yes, visitors make use of local services at the same time and stop at the Marimekko outlet, Shell and the northern end, as the locals call the liquor store, laughs Valden.
Kayakers and cyclists have also found Kyyjarvi Camping. From the campsite you can paddle along the Saarijärvi route, instead, for example, Spanish cycling groups have stopped at Kyyjärvi on their way to the shores of the Arctic Ocean.
Sunset is worth to stay for in Kyyjärvi
The entrepreneur says that many people know Kyyjärvi and have driven by, but have never stopped there.
– That’s the trick, to get people to stop and get to know the area. There are not many well-known tourist attractions in northern Central Finland, our main attraction is the sunset every night, which the area has an unobstructed view of. Event provision is one way to increase attraction. Our strength is also smallness and friendliness, this campsite is not a factory.
